Biography

Dr. Kelsey Shields is a trumpet performer, music educator, researcher, arranger, and sheet music publisher in the Los Angeles area. She currently maintains her sheet music publishing company, Pemberley Music, and maintains a thriving trumpet studio. She composed and published her Scale Compendium for Trumpet in 2020. Her trumpet students have received excellent solo contest ratings and/or been named to all-district, all-state, and honorable mention lists. Previously, she was an Adjunct Instructor of Music at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Missouri, where she taught music theory and music appreciation and directed the jazz band.

As a trumpet soloist, Kelsey has won International Trumpet Guild competitions, performed in the National Trumpet Competition semifinals, and earned festival scholarships. She also has extensive ensemble experience, having played in the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Fountain City Brass Band, as well as brass quintets, university orchestras, jazz bands, and a gamelan ensemble.

In addition to teaching and performing, Kelsey is equally engaged in scholarly research. At the 2017 International Women’s Brass Conference, she presented her doctoral research and brass quintet arrangements in a lecture-recital. She has also presented papers and posters at national conferences such as the College Music Society National Conference and the National Association for Music Education History Special Research Interest Group Symposium.

Dr. Shields completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. She earned her Master of Music in Music Education at the Eastman School of Music and her Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance at Truman State University, where she was named Outstanding Undergraduate in Music and graduated summa cum laude. Kelsey studied trumpet with Dr. Keith Benjamin, James Thompson, Douglas Prosser, and Dr. Gregory Jones.
